In the years following her husband's death, Komako Fukuyoshi successfully ran Fukuya, her family's Kyoto-based confectionery shop passed down through many generations. While working tirelessly to keep Fukuya prosperous, Komako has raised three daughters: Hina, the eldest who Komako plans as her successor; Arare, a headstrong college dropout who regularly fails to win her mother's approval; and Hana, a tall middle-school student who quietly observes the plights of her mother and sisters. One fateful day, Hina makes a decision that disrupts her family and alters the course of Fukuya's future: she accepts the marriage proposal of Kaoru Hinomiya, an aloof bank clerk. Hina is resentful of herself for allowing her mother to control her life for decades.
